The Nguyen dynasty was forced to forfeit parts of southern Vietnam to the French during the occupation. Many years later, three red stripes against a yellow background were used as the national flag for the State of Vietnam (“South Vietnam”) and after the Fall of Saigon in 1975 was used by the now-dispersed Vietnamese “boat people” claiming it to be the true flag. The diaspora now are all over - Canada, US, Australia to name a few. Doing this piece allowed me to read up and connect with my heritage and history (something I admit my family and I haven’t discussed very much of). I wanted to throw a nod to my Canadian heritage too and depict a Great Blue Heron - a bird I’ve come across a rare time in my childhood exploring a wetland during a field trip. As someone who resides on stolen land, I wanted to share that the great blue heron in Native culture is often depicted as a messenger of self-determination and self-reliance. That being said, they rely heavily on wetlands which are disappearing under the pressure of human activity.
